I’ve felt the change in the colors in leaves.
The color of dreams. Time passing in sleep…
Fall, fall…~Future Islands: “In the Fall”
The only thing I love more than a good disney movie, is a good disney movie with a message. And that is exactly what can be found in the heart-warming story of Cinderella. Even in the darkest of moments, when everyone was against her and she didn’t seem to have a thread of hope left, in faith she declares: “They can’t order me to stop dreaming”.
Well Cindy, I will take you one step further and draw upon your courage to declare: Not only can they “not order me to stop dreaming” they also can’t keep you dreaming the same dream. From the first time we’re asked “what do you want to be when you grow up” in pre-school to the first day we put on our business casual attire and walk into an interview: we’re either affirmed or looked down upon for our ambitions, our desires, our dreams. “I want to be a doctor.” GOOD. THANK GOD. LET’S BUY THE OPERATION GAME BEFORE SHE CHANGES HER MIND.” “I want to be an artist.” “Oh, that’s nice little boy, but you can do that in your spare time on your way to a career in finance. Or on second thought, just doodle in your 3 hour conference call meetings about stocks and bonds. And just like that our dreams change…because sometimes we adopt another’s dream for our lives and begin living lives that others were meant to live.
But what if we were given the freedom to embrace a change in dreams like we embrace the change in seasons? What if we let some dreams die that weren’t really ours to begin with, and really explore the colors of our souls. What makes your passion burn red? What brings you blue tranquil peace? What did you think would when you were in high school, college, in your 3rd job? It’s never too late to ask these questions. It’s never too late to dream a new dream. We can’t just let time pass us by. We can’t live our lives wondering what would happen if we actually found the courage inside ourselves to pursue that dream, no matter who told us we couldn’t. No matter who tried to stop you from dreaming. No matter the cost or the time spent. Don’t sleep your life away, dream it into being. Don’t’ close your eyes to what you really want and never close your eyes to miss a difficult season in your life. It may be in that difficult season where you truly begin to see what your life is all about. What could happen if you lived out your dreams.
